Among the first established colleges of Linyi University, the College of Life Sciences grows up from the Department of Biology, the Department of Biology, Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, as well as the Department of Biology Sciences. The College was founded in July, 2003. In August 2009, the College of Urban and Rural Economics was merged into the College of Life Sciences via the school’s rearrangement of departments.
Nowadays, the College of Life Sciences consists of the Department of Biology Sciences, the Department of Food Industry, the Department of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, and the Biology Education and Experiment Center. Among the 113 faculty members, there are 12 Full Professors, 38 Associate Professors, 34 teachers with a doctoral degree, 42 teachers with a master’s degree, and 8 candidates of Doctor. 19 teachers have been studied abroad. In the last three years, more than 20 teachers had their sabbaticals in Peking University, China Agricultural University, Beijing Forestry University and some other famous universities, as well as in Institutes like China Academy of Sciences. Meanwhile there are more than 20 local experts and 15 foreign teachers in our college.
The Biology Education and Experiment Center was named a provincial demonstration center of experimental education by the Department of Education, Shandong Province in 2009. The center has more than 70 laboratories in different fields, coving more than 13000 square meters. All the experiment equipments enjoy a total value of 30 million Yuan. Our student could have access to rather advanced facilities like two-dimensional electrophoresis, quantitative PCR instrument, patch-clamps, etc. In the Biology Hall of the School Museum, there are more than 4500 specimens of around 3200 kinds of animals and plants. The College provides the students with an excellent study environment and an abundance of study resources.
The college now offers a total of 5 undergraduate degree programs: Biology Sciences(for teachers), Biology Technology, Veterinary Medicine, Garden, Food Science and Engineering. There are also junior college programs including Biological Education, Biology Technology and its Application, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Animal Epidemic Prevention and Quarantine, Garden Technology and so on. There are more than 1400 full-time students. The college enjoys 4 characteristic specialties, 14 quality courses, 5 outstanding teaching team and 3 bilingual model curriculums of the school.
The college has gained significant achievements in researches. Now we host 3 items of NFSC, a 863 sub-topic, 2 projects of Scientific and Technological Projects in Shandong Province, 6 items of Natural Science Foundation of Shandong Province and 2 items of Ph.D. Fund in Shandong Province. We also host another more than 10 projects of provincial research topics in different fields.
